Samsung Unveils IP-based Multimedia Subsystem - Enables Global Availability of Converged Telecommunications Services via WiMAX Network

9:47 pm   -   April 6th, 2006

At the annual CTIA Wireless 2006 trade show, Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung) unveiled today its IP-based Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) solution that will enable the global availability of converged telecommunications services via a WiMAX network. The latest product portfolio consists of two elements that support the IMS solution — the Radio Access Station (RAS) and the Access Control Router (ACR).

The IMS network, which is the basis of Samsung’s WiMAX platform, will deliver high-speed services like voice, video conferencing and instant messaging, to rural and suburban locations not accessible by current technology. The solution also will create broadband “hot zones” in more densely populated areas.

The suite of IMS products includes IMS servers (IMS-Serving, IMS-Proxy and IMS-Server), IMS-Media Gateway Controller, IMS Media Gateway and IMS Media Resource Function. The products, capable of serving small to large markets, offer high performance packet processing with end-to-end quality service and carrier-class capabilities like integrated billing.

The Standard RAS features a smart antenna with advanced radio frequency technology. Its high capacity and 802.16e air interface protocol provides broadband data rates of up to 30 Mbps per sector, while supporting three to six sectors. Built for large-scale deployments, the Standard RAS enables faster download times for end users in dense urban areas to the suburbs.

The Mini-RAS is a smaller version of the Standard RAS, capable of the same 20W power output but mountable on ceilings, walls or poles. Both RAS models deliver the network access, convenience and cost savings required by a WiMAX system.

Containing an IP-based radio access network architecture based on the IMS core network, the ACR enables efficient mobility management with a centralized control structure and maximized micro-mobility capability. The ACR also facilitates seamless wireless connectivity by minimizing the handover latency on Layer 2 over the air and minimizing bearer path switching delay on the network.

Samsung’s suite of WiMAX-ready products usher in the age of converged services delivered from a single, IP-based network. Home, business, and vehicular applications include Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), video telephony, multimedia messaging and conferencing, location and telematic services, broadcast, and multimedia push and demand services.

The company is showcasing these products in booth #3226 at the CTIA show in Las Vegas, Wednesday, April 5 to Friday, April 7, with the “World’s First Mobile WiMAX Deployment” demo.

“Samsung is using the valuable experience gained from supporting WiBRO in Korea to strengthen the ongoing development of WiMAX services for the global market,” said Tom Jasny, vice president for Samsung’s Wireless & Broadband Network Systems. “We hope to bring the success we’ve had in the first quarter of this year in Korea to the U.S. and beyond.”

Bailout with a price: Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Mention a corporate bailout in the nation's capital these days and chances are someone will offer a harsh condition to go along with it. Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Lately, the term 'prepackaged bankruptcy' has been gaining currency in the halls of Congress as lawmakers struggle with pleas for help from the auto industry.

The idea, embraced by some Democrats and Republicans, would extend taxpayer help in exchange for a company undergoing an accelerated Chapter 11 reorganization. The arrangement could represent a model, or a deterrent, for any other strapped companies considering seeking government help.

Stocks heads to lower open ahead

Wall Street headed for a lower open Wednesday with investors worried about the economic fallout if Detroit's Big Three automakers are unable to persuade lawmakers to give them a $25 billion bailout.

The market will again be glued to testimony given during the session by top executives from General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC. They are asking Congress for a massive infusion of cash to prevent millions of layoffs, stave off bankruptcy and stabilize the companies.

Investors are concerned at the repercussions should any of the three automakers collapse, an event that could ripple through an already battered economy. Congressional Democrats have proposed using part of the $700 billion financial bailout package to pump into the ailing auto industry, but Republicans oppose such an approach.

HP shares soar after solid 4Q outlook

Hewlett-Packard Co. offered a fourth-quarter outlook slightly above Wall Street's expectations Tuesday despite the sagging economy, going against the grain even as other technology bellwethers have slashed forecasts and posted weak results in recent weeks.

Its shares climbled more than 13 percent in morning trading.

The Palo Alto, Calif.-based company expects earnings of 84 cents per share and adjusted earnings of $1.03 per share for the three months ended in October. This is slightly better than the $1 per share, excluding items, that analysts polled by Thomson Reuters are expecting.

Stock futures fall ahead of automakers' testimony

Wall Street appeared ready to retreat again Tuesday, as stock futures sank amid nervousness about the fate of Detroit's Big Three auto makers.

On Tuesday, executives of General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and Chrysler LLC and the head of the United Auto Workers union will testify at a Senate Banking Committee hearing. The automakers, seeking $25 billion in government aid, have the backing of Democratic congressional leaders, but the Bush administration and Republican lawmakers are against the proposed bailout.
