HP Deepens New Generation OSS Commitment with Support for OSS/J and TMF Standards
HP today announced its participation in a number of industry initiatives designed to help telecom companies manage voice and data networks more efficiently through New Generation Operations Systems and Software (NGOSS) technologies. The HP Integrated Service Management (ISM) platform is HP’s Operational Support System (OSS) offering. It uses a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) to integrate operations and business support systems to help carriers and operators manage networks and services.
HP is enhancing HP ISM with functionality from the OSS through Javaâ„¢ initiative (OSS/J). This initiative focuses on the adoption of standards-based Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) and design guidelines for the development of component-based OSS systems. OSS/J technologies provide the foundation for unifying legacy systems and new applications quickly and at low cost.
HP has developed an OSS/J adapter that provides a flexible, standards-based interface for HP OpenView TeMIP, the industry’s most comprehensive and flexible network management offering. HP OpenView TeMIP unifies and integrates multiple management domains across a full range of infrastructures including wireless, wireline, IP and IT environments.
“As networks become more converged and more complex, and subscribers demand better service, operators must emphasize OSS as never before,” said Michele Campriani, worldwide director, Operations Domain, Network and Service Provider Solutions, HP. “As part of its Integrated Service Management blueprint, HP is helping customers like Vodafone implement New Generation OSS solutions – and reap the benefits.â€
HP has implemented the OSS/J adapter for HP OpenView TeMIP at Vodafone Germany. Three additional Vodafone subsidiaries are in the process of implementing this integration. The Vodafone Group is considering this adapter as part of its strategy to deploy a non-proprietary, standards-based OSS infrastructure.
“As more and more carriers have to lower OSS integration costs and evolve towards a modular next generation OSS architecture, there will be a growing demand for the OSS/J standard and its already available set of OSS integration APIs,” said Jörg Frankenberger, head of OSS Engineering, Vodafone D2 GmbH, and chair of the OSS/J Steering Committee. “HP’s experience and expertise helped Vodafone achieve the benefits that OSS/J and other TMF standards can bring in the area of network and service management.â€
HP has contributed extensively to the TeleManagement Forum (TMF) NGOSS initiative. At the same time, HP OSS solution components have been largely based on NGOSS concepts, such as eTOM, MTNM, SID, and the SLA Handbook. HP’s Integrated Service Management offering (ISM) is one of very few solutions in the world which offer a concrete NGOSS based OSS Integration. The TMF is a non-profit global organization that provides leadership, strategic guidance and practical solutions to improve the management and operation of information and communications services.
About the OSS through Javaâ„¢ Initiative
Led by a group of services providers — including Vodafone, BT, Cantv, Covad, and Qinetiq — the OSS through Java™ Initiative (OSS/J) is a working group of industry leaders committed to sharing experience, methodologies, ideas, and artifacts supporting the widely adopted OSS through Java telecommunications platform. OSS/J helps telecommunications companies harness the power of their Operations Support Systems (OSS). The Initiative makes available free of charge technologies that significantly reduce integration costs (the single largest roadblock to profitability) while fostering more effective relationships between vendors and buyers.
