Highdeal Report - How to Save Money, While Saving the Planet

12:52 pm   -   February 13th, 2009

Highdeal released a Green Charging Report advising Telecom companies on how to grow their green credentials and reduce their carbon footprint, while saving money.

Telecom operators rightly tout the fact that by using their services customers can communicate more easily and therefore reduce the need for environmentally-costly travel. Similarly, online information and e-commerce has allowed the economy to grow while somewhat reducing the need for physical storefronts and trips to and from them. The Highdeal Green Charging Report encourages Telecom companies to go even further and to start thinking about how they can create smart pricing that encourages users to behave in ways that consume less energy and lower energy costs.

The report also urges operators to consider running their pricing & charging solution on less power-hungry hardware. The data centers that run the OSS, BSS, and Applications consume close to a quarter of the power used on a typical incumbent operator’s infrastructure. A simple, cost and energy efficient solution would be to implement an online charging solution that can be scaled horizontally across several smaller, more energy-efficient hardware servers. This can reduce the corresponding power and cooling requirements in the datacenter by a factor of 10.

“The global greenhouse gas emissions of telecom and IT systems, networks, and data centers surpassed the carbon footprint of the aviation industry for the first time in 2007. Highdeal believes it is an opportune time to raise awareness about how our product can be used to positively influence customer behavior, lower emissions and to mitigate the effects of global warming. Companies need to start putting a price on pollution,” says Eric Pillevesse, CEO of Highdeal.
