Revenues from mobile location-based services (LBS) in the European market will grow by 34 percent annually to reach about $622 million in 2010, according to a new report from the research firm Berg Insight. Johan Fagerberg, senior analyst at Berg Insight, said that the market is picking up speed through successful launches of mobile personal navigation services and location based billing plans in several European countries.

“Nokia’s recent acquisition of Gate5 is an evident example of the importance mobile industry players attach to navigation”, said Johan. “We expect GPS-enabled handsets with preinstalled navigation software to become available from the leading brands on the European market very soon.” Berg Insight forecasts that navigation will account for 48 percent of mobile LBS revenues in 2010. Investments in intelligent metering solutions in the European energy sector will total 3.5 billion until 2010, according to new a research report from the analysis firm Berg Insight.

“Demand for intelligent metering solutions is closely linked to energy cost”, says Tobias Ryberg, senior analyst at Berg Insight. “Already most industrial and large commercial sites are covered with intelligent metering. In a second phase we now see deployments of smart meters for residential customers in countries with high electricity prices or high electricity consumption.”

Sweden, where households use three times more electric power than the EU-average, will introduce a law that will lead to intelligent metering for all customers by 2009. (more…)

Berg Insight has recently completed a survey among 200 European location-based services (LBS) professionals in order to take the temperature of this important mobile value added service category. Berg Insight made the survey among LBS professionals at mobile operators, vendors and consultancies in Europe. There were two sets of questions asked to the 200 respondents, one to operators and another set to vendors and consultancies.

Berg Insight asked the operators which LBS applications they already have deployed and got not surprisingly the reply that the most common services today are information services such as yellow pages near you and local weather information. A new research report from the analysis firm Berg Insight forecasts that shipments of handset based personal navigation solutions in Europe and the US will reach 12 million units by 2009. The year 2005 marked the first successful marriage of cellular and navigation technologies, resulting in shipments of around 1 million on-board and off-board systems, mainly in the fourth quarter. Supported by the phenomenal growth recorded in the PND segment, handset based personal navigation solutions are expected to grow by 86 percent year-on-year. (more…)

A new research report from the analysis firm Berg Insight forecasts that at least 25 million machines will be connected to mobile networks in Europe by 2009. Currently Berg Insight estimates the number of wireless M2M connections on the continent to 5 million.

“We know that growth in the number of mobile phones is coming to an end in the developed world. There is however now clear evidence that other devices will assume the leading role in market developments. As people migrate to the new 3G networks in growing numbers, the old reliable GSM-networks will increasingly become the domains of our machines”, comments Tobias Ryberg, senior analyst at Berg Insight.

Utility meters and vehicles are identified as the segments with the far greatest potential. “Right now we have several projects where up to 500,000 electricity meters will be connected to mobile networks for automated meter reading and that is just the beginning”, says Tobias. “It is the same in the vehicle sector. Half a million trucks are now monitored with GSM/GPS as part of Germany’s Toll Collect system and over one hundred thousand motorists in Italy have signed up for pay-as-you-drive insurance schemes.” (more…)
